Pinetree Line Sioux Lookout

With nothing to do on a Thursday night I decided to travel the 100 or so kilometres to the vacated Pinetree Line radar station near Sioux Lookout. After conversing with locals in Sioux Lookout I was able to determine that the base's location was south of town and in the middle of nowhere. If my past trip's to remote bases were any indicator, I was going to be looking for a paved road leading into the bush.

As I sped down the highway I noticed a small paved road leading into the bush and immediately made my way to it.  The condition of the road quickly deteriorated as the smooth pavement gave way to a washboard. Passing the rusted gate and disjointed electrical substation I made my way down the "road" and eventually onto the base.

There are separate area's to what is left of the base; the bunks and mess hall area which occupies the west end of the base;  a large clearing where a number of buildings once existed in the middle and the radar towers on the eastern portion of the base. While there were a number of buildings left in the western portion of the base many had been gutted to the bone. There was one exception though, the western most bunkhouse was occupied by a family who had bought the base and made it self-sustaining.

With nothing left to explore I traveled up the hill to the radar towers. While there were a number of buildings remaining all were stripped bare. The only interesting thing about the buildings on the hill was the command center/operations room which still had all of the furniture in its original place. After taking some landscape pictures atop the radar towers I headed back to my tent and awaited another work day.
